Churros have always been a Christmas classic in my family, dating back to my childhood. As we decorated the house for the holiday season, my mom would whip up a batch of these delicious treats. Paired with the richest and creamiest hot chocolate I’ve ever tasted, made with real chocolate bars, it was a magical combination that always brought a smile to our faces.

To this day, I’m not sure which was better – the decorating or the churros – but whenever my mom made this combo during other times of the year, it felt like something was missing. That’s why I’ve carried on the tradition with my own family, making churros and hot chocolate during the holiday season to bring a touch of magic and nostalgia to our celebrations.

Equipment

  • 1 Churro press, cookies press with star attachment

Ingredients

  • 500 ml Water
  • 500 gram Flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 liter Oil

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan, combine the water, 3 tablespoons oil, salt and baking powder. Bring to a boil. Once foaming, remove from heat and pour directly over the flour in a bowl. Stir well with a wooden spoon until you have a stiff dough.
  • Fill a churro pump with the dough, press to remove any air pockets of air.
  • Heat the oil in a deep frying pan or a wok. Pump out the dough in 15 - 20 cm lengths. Fry in the hot oil til golden brown. Fry in batches so the pan is not overcrowded.
  • Remove churros from the oil and drain on a piece of kitchen paper. Place on a serving platter and sprinkle with caster sugar and cinnamon. Enjoy with coffee or hot chocolate
